Sunset verzachting

Part 2

Towards the end of the afternoon, I can feel it: the calm of nature slowly settling into my body. Where earlier in the day I was still searching a little, quite switched ‘on’, mostly noticing how everyone around me was working, I can now feel the serenity of this place slowly opening up to me. Sometimes the art lies not in doing more, but in doing less, even though for me that often comes with some resistance. I find myself somewhere in between surrendering to the stillness and wanting to move with what’s happening around me, to help, to contribute something. I’m usually the first to ask: what can I do, where can I jump in, how can I help? But perhaps the invitation for me here was exactly the opposite: to simply receive for a moment, and just be.

Sitting with a glass of wine on a white bench, with a 180-degree view and the sun slowly sinking into the sea (yes, in this case even to the soundtrack of the summer hit) I can feel that sense of ease rising from my feet upwards. As if this place is gently reminding me that not everything needs an active contribution in order to have value.

What helps, too, is picking your own vegetables, walking along the terraces and watching the clouds slowly change in colour and shape as the air begins to cool. Summer is officially coming to an end here, which also means that today is harvest day. Something joyful in itself, although nature has shown a different side of herself this summer too.

As one heatwave after another swept across Europe, the drought has also left its mark on Stella di Lemmen. It has never been this dry here, and you can see it, feel it and, most likely, eventually taste it too. And yet, there’s no lack of dedication to make the best of what is here, and to accept this too as part of what nature is offering this year or perhaps, what she isn’t able to offer. It breaks my heart a little to see it, while at the same time there is something hopeful in the care and attention with which life here continues. Perhaps those two things can simply exist alongside each other: hope and despair, just as receiving and giving may sometimes be closer to one another than we think.
